TNPSC Exam Pattern

The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission is an independent body of the Government of Tamil Nadu that is responsible for conducting examinations for appointments to the various services of the Tamil Nadu State. It operates under Articles 315 to 323 of Part XIV of the constitution of India.

Public Service Commission’s rightly find a place of pride in the Indian Constitution. Articles 16, 234, 315 to 323 deal with various functions and powers of the Public Service Commissions. The working of Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission is also regulated by Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission Regulation, 1954 and the TNPSC Rules of Procedure.

TNPSC is responsible for appointments to and examinations for Group A, Group B, Group C and Group D of Tamil Nadu state services.

About TNPSC Exams

TNPSC Combined Civil Services Examinations-I (Group – I Services)

TNPSC Group I Exam is a state-wide competitive examination in Tamil Nadu conducted by TNPSC for recruitment to various Group A services of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Eligibility: Qualification: Any Degree

Preliminary Examination

  • The Examination comprise of one paper of 300 marks. (200 Qns)
  • It is of objective type (multiple choice question).
  • This Examination is meant to serve as a screening test only.
  • The marks obtained in the preliminary examination by the candidates who are declared qualified for admission to the Main Examination will not be counted for determining their final order of merit.
  • The question papers will be set both in Tamil and English.
  • There will be no negative marking for incorrect answers.

Main Written Examination

  • The written examination will consist of 3 papers of conventional Essay type.
  • The Question papers will be set in both English and Tamil
  • Main written Examination will be held at Chennai only.

Interview

  • The number of candidates to be summoned for interview will be about twice the number of vacancies to be filled. The interview will carry 120 marks (with no minimum qualifying marks).
  • The Interview will be held at Chennai TNPSC office only.
  • Marks obtained in all the papers and marks obtained in interview for personality test will be counted together for final ranking.

Current Pattern of TNPSC Group II Examination

The selection will be made in three successive stages.

Preliminary Examination

  • The Examination comprise of one paper (200 Qns) of 300 marks.
  • It is of objective type (multiple choice questions).
  • This Examination is meant to serve a screening test only. The marks obtained in the prelims exam by the candidates who are declared qualified for admission to the Main Examination will not be counted for determining their final order of merit.
  • The questions on General Studies will be set both in Tamil and English and the questions of General Tamil / General English will be set in the respective languages.
  • The paper will be of three hours duration.
